First blog assignment

" If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a noise?", this is a famous saying that most should be familiar with. This is a saying that anyone trying to bring attention to their cause probably live by as well. I say this because in the world of causes, it is always important to drop the biggest tree and to make sure as many as possible hear it fall. This is what the Serb terrorist organization, the Black Hand, and Al quieda both counted on.
Both of these organizations wanted to put their cause in the center stage of world news. Not only did they intend to put these acts in the world news but they also had other shared intentions. The wanted to use terror to let these "superior" countries know that they could get to them and hurt them at the highest levels. The fear of vulnerability in their victims is a goal of terrorism as well. They also showed the same intent of just simple retribution for wrongs they felt were committed against them.
The intent of instilling the fear of vulnerability was achieved when the Serbs assasinated the next in line to the Austria- Hungary throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, on June 28 of 1914. Al Quieda attacked the mighty U. S., in their largest city and capital. Their intentions in both of these acts was also to weaken them. With the Black Hand, it was the weakening of the Austria- Hungary government. Al Quieda had the intent of attacking the economy and the psyche of America.
Al Quieda and the Black Hand both hoped to provoke disorganization and reprisal against themselves. Yes, reprisal against themselves. In this disorganization, a not well thought through call for revenge would be called for. In this, these terrorist organizations would raise allies to their call. The Black Hand would raise Serb nationalism to a higher level and would still have Russia as an ally. Al Quieda would also bring attention to their Islamic extremism.
The nature of terror is the power that you allow it to have on you. Fear and anger are natural feelings, but how you react to those feeling is what is most important. Do you let those feeling pass and then make sensible decisions? That is what we wish our leaders would do. We wish that our leaders would put sensible thought first and go away from the path of wrath. Wars are the most serious matters that our governments can ask their people to commit to and so our government should ensure that it was the last resort. It is a benchmark in the evolution of man, when nations can take the harder road of peace, and move away from the barbarity of the usual programmed response.
Terrorism is a tool of the desperate. It is a tool that the populace does need to be protected against. Terrorist groups will use the power of the media in order to make sure that as many people will hear the tree fall. Once that happens it is important not play into their hands. When you react in the opposite of what they would expect you to, then you have taken away their power.
